Physical Education

Overview

Introduction

This course aims to develop a range of skills and knowledge through involvement in sport and physical activity in different contexts and roles. Students will develop their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations and gain a better understanding of the complexity of different areas of sport and the sports industry. Students will also learn about the different careers and roles available in the sports industry.

  • Examination: 60%
    • Component 1: Fitness and body systems | 1 hour 30 mins | 36%
    • Component 2: Health and performance | 1 hour 15 mins | 24%
  • Non-examined assessment: 40%
    • Component 3: Practical performance | 30%
    • Component 4: Personal exercise programme | 10%

Curriculum

Course content

Paper 1

  • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this to improve performance.
  • How the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport.
  • Analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport.

Paper 2

  • The contribution that physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and wellbeing.
  • Key socio-cultural influences that can affect people’s involvement in physical activity and sport.

Practical

  • Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques, selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas.
  • Students are assessed in three activities: 1 team, 1 individual and an option. These include: football, rugby, handball, netball, badminton, trampolining, dance, swimming and climbing (residential).

Skills required

  • It is recommended that students choose this course if they play at least one sport at club level.
  • Have a passion for the practice and theory of physical activity.
  • The desire to understand the theorical side of PE.
  • Have good ICT skills.
  • Be able to work independently to overcome challenges whether practically or in theory.
  • Can work in a team supporting others and be able to communicate effectively to influence a game.
  • Have an understanding of sport and how this can link to theory topics eg cardiorespiratory system, fitness and training etc.

Beyond the classroom

Future pathways

Students can progress from this qualification to:

  • further study of physical education at AS and A-level (if sport is played at club level minimum)
  • vocational courses such as the BTEC Nationals in sport and sport and exercise sciences
  • apprenticeships and other training
  • employment in a related sector
